Kirby's Dream Land (100th Action Game)  

Game of the Year

There were a lot of games I've played, some were memorable but these 3 was the best games  that I've played last year

3. Donkey Kong (Gameboy) 

I've heard about this game before but it wasn't until I played it I finally understand why. This game is Mario platforming at it essence. Combine that with 100 of stages and boss battles. You got yourself a solid game that is close to 23 years of age and still holds up again all the other games in the list. 

2. The Wolf Among Us

It seems to be a trend where the first game I've played in the year will be among the top 3 games of my year. The Wolf Among Us is no exception. The storyline is captivating and would leave you guessing until the end. They say that a sequel is in the works for 2018. Let's hope that can top themselves from this masterpiece.

1. Uncharted Lost Legacy 

What can I say. I am a sucker for Uncharted. I thought 2016 was going to be the last Uncharted game that I've played for a while, but it turns out that 2017 they made another Uncharted game. In my opinion this is better than UC4 since the storyline is not that convoluted and the action is subtle. In the end this 10 hour game was an amazing journey and I would not want it to end.   

Series

This year I've been watching a lot of comedies and reruns, probably is because is getting harder to binge a series when your wife doesn't want to watch it as well. I watch when I can

(UN)MEMORABLE MOMENTS FOR 2017

2017 has been the most challenging year for my whole family. Lets list down what happen

1. Went for an operation to remove a lymphoma at the back of my neck
2. Not before I found out even that I've met my years KPI, my idiot ceo decided not to give me my bonus 
3. Quit my job due to lack of appreciation
4. Kids and wife were in and out of hospital in the month of April
5. Maid went home.
6. Got a maid and she turns out to bicker with everyone until we have to send her back
7. Wife had her appendix removed
8. Wife's Appendix would got infected and she had to go back to emergency surgery 
9. Got another maid and turns out she was manipulating us and if we didn't meet her demand she would ran away.
10. No job means no money  

MEMORABLE MOMENTS FOR 2017

1. Kids change to a better and cheaper school
2. I started doing my postgraduate in October
3. My wife submitted her final PHD corrections and is waiting for the results.
4. I got a switch.
5. Finding out that everyone will miss me when I left the company. I didn't pay for lunch that whole 2 months. 

2017 New Years Resolution

1. Really lose 10kg this time... This time with wife so have to be serious. (Nope didn't happen. I am now 88kg which is bad. My wife however lost 7kg and it shows. Damn it) 

2. Try to find some change in life. (Yup, quitting my job and becoming back a full time house husband and student)

3. Be a better dad. (Yup, I guess I was better than last year) 

4. Balance in life in terms of all the other stuff (Not really, I still do other stuff more than the religious stuff) 

5. Get the Switch. (Well I didn't, but it was a gift for me so that counts) 

2018 New Years Resolution

1. Third time is the charm... Lose 10 kg... By the time end of 2018 I am going to be 78kg

2. Don't spend to much time gaming. Need to finish part of my masters

3. Better a better person religiously and stop doing the even more unrelated. 

4. Go for at least 3 vacations with the family.

5. Get the GPD Win 2

Nintendo Switch

I thought I will end this year with nothing new but low and behold my wife and her sister decide to suprised me with this 

I got this on Xmas day. So technically is a xmas present. They bought the grey joycon version with jewel case and a copy of my most wanted game for the year Super Mario Odyssey. 

The moment I booted it up I decided to get a couple of co-op games like Mario Kart, Just Dance 2018 and overcook. Plus Steamworld Dig 2 since it was on sale.

Need to get another Joycon and a memory card. But I am not in a rush to do that. Need to funds for this cool item first.  

Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle

The classic movie returns with new challenges and adventures

What is it about: Jumanji has returned. The 20 year old movie is re imagined by becoming a video game. I wonder what system does it plays on?

The good:
- This movie is epic hilarious. Rather than make a serious Jumanji movie, they knew that withthese actors, a comedy would fare better
- Jack Black and Kevin Hart stole the show
- The dick jokes are not campy
- They follow the rules of normal gameplay, with health, NPC and power ups
- The movie is fast paced and each scene is a different check point

The bad:
- The change the Jumanji formula where we need to play the board and solve the riddles from it. Makes the game less suspenseful
- Not enough comedic moments with the Rock
- The bad guy is underwhelming
- The really need to do a prequel about how the game was made.

The Ugly:
- Nothing much

After Credits: No

Verdict: It was the first movie where we brought the big and small kid in. They enjoy it very much. There were some loud scene but it was an enjoyable movie nontheless.

Contra Hard Corps

I think this game is one of its kind

Game no: 281

Genre: Shooter

Platform: Genesis

 

Difficulty: Hard 

What is it about: A standard contra game but with an actual storyline 

What's great: 

- 4 different characters with different play styles
- 5 different powerups that stay with you until you die. Each power up comes with a different ability
- Story has multiple paths, there is even a part where you can join the enemy

What's not so great: 

- Bosses are hard
- You will die a lot

Music: Ok 

Status: Finish the game with the good ending

Should you play this game: No, this game does not age well. 

Fun Factor: Great art style, decent game

Wonder

Make this movie a mandatory watch for all kids

What is it about: Is about a boy who suffers for a genetic disorder that makes him different from the rest of the school kids. Basically is about bullying and acceptance 

The good: 

The story is heartwarming and touching

The story really relates to my kid who having the same issue at school.

All the actors are spot on

The girl who plays via is super cute. 

Even the bully plays the role of the bully well. Since it's a prep school there are not fist fighting. More words

It cuts to a different point of view from different characters 

The bad: 

The movie does a lot of time cuts so, the whole story is not fully told.

The Ugly:

Wanted to see more of the story

After credits: No

Verdict: A good watch and a must to bring the kids too

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

This movie will leave you guessing



What is it about: Continuing after the events of the Force Awakens. We follow our heroes through different journeys in order to stop the upcoming threat of evil

The Good: 
Everything you like from Star Wars is here, Space Battles, Lightsabers, Luke Skywalker, Good vs Evil is all here.
The movie waste no time in giving you the main story without giving any extra filler (except one)
Mark Hamill and Carrier Fisher performance in this movie is at their peak of their career.
There are some jokes and most of them stick the landing.
There is an epic lightsaber scene in the middle of the movie which is awesome.
This movie has a lot of plot twist that you can figure out what is going to happen next.

The Bad:
Everything we want answered in Episode 7 got retconned in episode 8. They didn't continue on the specific questions that fans want answered. Well I want answers: Questions like
1) Who is Rey's parents?
2) Who is Snoke?
3) Why Finn is different that the rest of the Stormtroopers?
There was no training scene in this movie. It is not like Empire where Yoda trained Luke. Is more of the opposite.
The character of Trico Rose was a waste of a good character. She's role is utter pointless in this movie and only serve as exposition.

The Ugly:
The death of the bad guy is very anticlimactic
The gambling planet scene was a waste of good screen time
Basically Finn and Trico act was pointless until the end.
In this movie they did not utilize Poe Damaron as much. In the end he is just left sitting and waiting for it too end.
General Hux character is damn annoying. Unless that's what he was planning to be. In that case. Good job.
Final battle was a let down.
Luke was great but he could have done more

After credit: No but they did give an in memory of for Carrie Fisher

Verdict: Watch this movie since is a great movie with some mishaps but the story is top notch. The best of the original trilogy.

Captain Commando

It turns out it's actually a beat em up

Genre: Action (Beat em up)

Platform: SNES 

Difficulty: Hard (even on easy) 

What is it about: You got from area to area and mow down bad guys. 

What's great: 

- Choose from 4 different commandos (Ninja, Mummy, Baby??, Captain)

- Each commando comes with its own special move. The mummy is the best since he does a helicopter rotation 

- Fighting is fast paced and head on 

- If you die you can continue straight from where you left off 

What's not so great:

- You only get two life's and the bosses are very cheap. You'll often die a lot 

- To amp up the challenge, everytime they used their special, you will lose a life. 

- The water stsge is not that great. It breaks you.

Music: So-so

Status: Finish the game but lost to the last boss

Should you play this game: No, I never understand the concept of beat en up. The game is a little bit of fun 

Fun Factor: A great way to waste your time 

Comix Zone

I think this game is one of its kind

Game no: 280

Genre: Action 

Platform: Genesis

 

Difficulty: Hard 

What is it about: A comic book artist gets  trapped by the bad guy he drew in his own comic.

What's great: 

- Art style is unique. You fight in different panels of the comic 

- Solve puzzles to advance the pages of the comic books

- Use your rat to find hidden items in the comic pages

- Fighting is face pace and there are many different moves to fight your way through 

- Use items such as a knife, bombs, dynamite and the power glove (that turns you into a superhero)

What's not so great: 

- The hitboxes are not that precise. Enemies will block most of your attacks. You'll end up button mashing the game

- Hitting anything that is not moving will cause your energy to drain out. Which makes it frustrating 

- Some requires you to use half of your life bar in order to progress.

- Some of the enemies are cheap 

Music: Ok 

Status: Finish the game with the bad ending. Watch the good ending at YouTube

Should you play this game: No, this game does not age well. If you want to check out the art style, sure why not 

Fun Factor: Great art style, decent game

Blackthrone

The heroes name is Blackthrone?? The heck

A very pleasant game. It's been a while since I posted

Game no: 279

Genre: Action

Platform: SNES

 

Difficulty: Moderate 

What is it about: From the makers of Warcraft, the game is about a guy who comes back to his dimension in order to save his kingdom.

What's great: 

- Art style is great. The animation looks smooth

- This game is more metroidvania lite where you need to slove puzzle and gain item in order to advance to the next stage 

- The game requires you to think your next move. So fights are slow pace 

- Different types of weapons and items that does not make the game feel stale 

- Pressing up will make you go in a different plane 

What's not so great: 

- You move damn slow. So sometimes you'll end up get shot at.

- Jumping is also a balancing act. Any wrong move you'll end dropping down

- You don't carry over the items you got from the previous stage which is a bummer  

Music: Ok. Very slow beats 

Status: Beat the game until the final boss 

Should you play this game: no, unless you have nothing else to play 

Fun Factor: A great way to waste your time 

Framed

A unique mobile game 

Game no: 278

Genre: Puzzle

Platform: iOS

What is it about?

Is a interactive comic book set in a film noir style where you play as an agent who needs to transfer some documents while avoiding the police. 

What's Great

- You move frames in order to determine the right sequence for the page. 

- Each panel gives different types of animation which is fun to watch at first.

- You can change the frame while the animation is moving. Which is cool 

- Music is great... Lots of smooth jazz.

What's not so great

- There are a lot of trial and error and if you miss a sequence, you need to try again. Watching a 1 minute animation again and again can get tedious

- No idea what's the story is about since there is no dialogue

Great for: Those who like comic books and puzzles 

Not so great for: People who doesn't have any patience. This game moves at a slow pace.

Status: Finish the game 

Fun Factor: A great game to waste your time.

Coco

Our love for each other will live on forever

What is it about: A tale about family and where one boys dream will make him seek the truth about his origins 

The Good: 

Pixar has outdone themselves with the animation. They even give a brief description on how hard is it to make the effects 

The story is simple and yet complicated 

There are at least a couple of twists in the movie

The songs are a nice addition. The only song that stuck in my head was the last song in the movie. 

It's a rollercoaster of emotions 

Reminds me of guacamelee and grim fandango.

The Frozen movie was also a good edition 

The Bad 

Nothing... 

The Ugly

After credits: No. Pixar rarely have after credits 

Verdict: You should watch this in the cinema. Just to support Pixar, plus is a great movie that warrants multiple viewings.

Justice League

It's not hitting all the right notes 

What is it about: Batman and Wonder Woman must recruit heroes to stop a threat that plan to destroy the world.

The Good: 

More of Wonder Woman and the Batman

The new heroes are a welcome addition

The breakout performer is Jason Mamoa who plans Aquaman. 

The effects are hit and a miss 

Action stands out 

Flash is funny and some of his jokes land. 

Superman is more light in character. Which is good since that's the Superman we love 

The music is a nod to 80's Batman and Superman soundtrack. 

The bad:

This movie is a bit disjointed. Scene move out from one to another. 

Batman is the Hawkeye of the group. He has been reduce to mere muscle and a suicide bomber rather than a brilliant technician. 

Their motivation for joining the team was so fast. I think that's the problem of no backstory. 

Steppenwolf is a CG mess. Makes him look less menacing.

A lot of scene were cut from the final film and it shows. 

The Ugly: 

The Flash runs like someone who doesn't know how to run properly. 

The only team members that are important is Superman and Cyborg 

It doesn't explain Superman new suit.

Henry Cavill very bad beard CG... Looks awful. 

After credits: Yup. 2 of them. Don't get the last part they show an obscure character. 

Verdict: Fun movie, but don't need to be a arch at the cinema. Wait for the BluRay release probably with extended footage 

Trevor Noah Born a Crime

A suprising read...

Trevor Noah is comedian who currently host the daily show. But how did his life started? How is his living growing in South Africa under the rule of Aparthied? 

How is it to be Born a Crime 

Title: Born a Crime Stories from a South African Childhood

Author: Trevor Noah (Daily Show host)

Chapters: 18 

What is this about:

It's about Trevor life growing up in South Africa with a black mother and a white father. The stories are not sequential but it moves from childhood, adolescent, teenager and adult. It touches on his love life, school, friends and most importantly his mom. This book is a love letter for her mom, the greatest women in her life. There are some chapters that are laugh out loud funny and there are some chapters that are sad and scary. It was a good read and i would definitely recommend it. 

Should you read it: yes, absolutely. Even you are not a fan of him also it's a good read 

Chiki Chiki Boys

A very pleasant game. It's been a while since I posted

Game no: 277

Genre: Action

Platform: Genesis

 

Difficulty: Moderate 

What is it about: No idea what's is it about but you play as a kid who likes playing dress up and needs to make his way on the tower 

What's great: 

Combat and platforming are spot on 

You have a power move that shoots balls

Stages varies from walking, flying and swimming 

Bosses provides a certain challenge 

You collect coins to buy upgrades

What's not so great: 

Nothing much... It's a solid action game 

Music: So-so

Status: Beat the game 

Should you play this game: yes, it's a feel good game that is fun to play

My wife had an operation

The past two weeks my wife keeps complaining of having stomach aches and nausea. Yesterday while at the specialist, he concluded that my wife's appendix is inflamed and needs to be operated. We were not expecting that. We checked in a room that had a dining area due to the fact that all other single rooms were not available. At 3pm today she went in surgery. She wouldn't return until close to 7pm. This is due to the fact that she was having a reaction to the general anesthetic. She is resting now... 

My cousin past away

Yesterday at 6.15am, my mom text me and said one of my close cousin (when I was young) past away. He suffered a brain tumor and he died due to water in the brain. I was not that close with him but I hope that Allah will bless his soul. al-fatihah

Blood, Sweat and Pixels

This is something new. My first and hopefully many book reviews.

What is it about:
Video game development has always been a secretive process (why? I have no idea. Probably due to they don't want their tech being used by other parties. Maybe they just don't want to be scrutinize by everyone on why the game is taken so long). This book is here to tell what goes behind the scene of some most popular video games in the market now.

The only game I've played out of this 10 chapters is only Uncharted 4 which for me is a great read since you can relate where the game developers had issues designing the game.  I've rank the chapters from great to ok. By far the story of Star Wars 1313 is an amazing tale on which a game that everyone put their blood, sweat and tears just died at the 11th hour. This read felt like I was reading a story that go either way (well we do know what happen to this game in the end). To tell the truth I love a story about developers who are underdogs and don't have any funding from their main company to develop a game. It shows that the struggle is real. Games like Diablo III is already a great game that requires more polish so the story is good but not that great.

Don't get me wrong, each chapter there are great moments to be had and you will appreciate how hard is it to design something for us to enjoy for 10-20 hours and never touch it ever again (makes you wonder right... you take years to work on something only to have it either loved or hated by the community)

I have a feeling that there is going to be a sequel to this book and I hope that a couple of game will be covered

1. Any Metal Gear Solid game (Anything from Kojima)
2. Anything from a Japanese publisher
3. Nintendo (they are a very secretive bunch)

I would definitely recommend this book to be read by anybody who loves games. Non gamers will probably won't enjoy this book as much since there are lot of game development talk here.

Biker Mice From Mars

Konami designs great games

Game no: 276 

Genre: Racing 

Platform: SNES

  

Difficulty: Easy (Since I played it on Easy) 

What's is it about:

The classic 90s cartoon about biker mice from Mars that is made into a racing game. 

What's great:

Isometric view of tracks. Each tracks comes with ramps and obstacles as well as power ups 

Choose for 6 different characters 

Upgrade your bike with 4 different upgrade points 

Use power ups such as missles and mines to fight your way to victory 

What's not so great:

The shoulder buttons is use to do a hard left and right. Some doesn't work that great. It will cause you to swerve the track 

You can't fully upgrade your bike since there are only 15 racers. Assuming you win every race, you still can't get full stats on all of your items. Which is a bummer since I was hoping to carry my upgrades to the easy level.

Music: Catchy. Lots of rock beats. The biker mice theme was not in the game but you can access it in the sound menu (wish most of the modern games have a sound test menu)

Status: Finish the game in easy
Should you play this: Yes and no, If you play it in normal or hard... you will probably lose badly. But you should try to play it with a friend. It is always fun playing a co-op racing game.

Lost my cat today 😞

During breakfast I wanted to go check on my cats. Came to their room and notice one of them were missing. We went all around the neighborhood looking for her but we can't find her. Duchess... Wherever you are I just want to say I'm sorry... 😭

Castlevania: Bloodlines

Super Mario Odyssey is an awesome game... Well while other are enjoying this great game I am playing another game that was also great during its time

Genre: Action
Platform: Genesis

 

Difficulty: Hard

What is it about: Follow two different characters as they travel around the world to fight Dracula minions

What's great:
Is not a typical Castlevania game where you travel in different locations fighting bosses. There are 6 Stages in total
Choose from two characters, John Morris who uses the Vampire Killer and Eric Lecarde who use a lance
The sub weapons have two types of different


What's not so great: 
The game does not age well.
The physics of the game is very wonkey. When you fall from a ledge you will drop down splat on the ground.

Music: Masterpiece... There are a couple notable soundtracks. There even taken some sound form the SNES game
Status: Finish the game with John Morris
Should you play this game: No, there is no fun in dying multiple times

Batman Returns

Konami does make great games

Game no: 274
Genre: Action (Beat-em up)
Platform: SNES

  

Difficulty: Hard (Even when this game is set on easy)

What is it about: Follow the events of the second Batman movie from start till finish

What's great: 
Fighting is spot on
Two different weapons (The batarang which serve as no function and the grappling hook which will get you from left to right in a flash)
Batmobile has a section where you fight goons on motorcyle
Lots and lots of clowns
There is a test tube where you use it to kill everyone in the background

What's not so great:
Enemies are relentless. The fire clown and the sword clown are specifically frustrating to fight
Bosses are cheap when it comes to attack and they need to be hit multiple times
You are basically just weatching a short version of the movie

Music: OK. Chiptunes of the classic Batman movie theme
Status: Finish the game
Should you play this game: Yes, its a great beat em up game that is good for short burst of play

Thor Ragnarok

The funniest Marvel movie to date 

What is it about: Thor loses everything and sets out  in a journey of self discovery to save himself and his people.

The good:

Chris Hemsworth does a lot of comedy in this movie which is good 

Loki plays a good part in this movie

Hulk is awesome in this movie, he plays a    4 year old

Mark Ruffulo kills it in this movie 

Suprise Marvel cameos and uncredited cameos 

Thor storyline is awesome 

Korg 

Jeff Goldblum performance is the most he is 

The Bad

Hela was an ok villain. Her scene felt forced and bored

Odin was not that long in the movie which is sad 

The endgame is ok I guess 

The Ugly 

Nothing much. The movie is ok 

After credits: Yes 

Verdict: One of the best movies in 2017 one of the best Marvel movies. 

Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse

The letter B has no good Genesis games

Genre: Platformer
Platform: Genesis

  

Difficulty: Challenging

What's is it about: Minnie has been kidnap and you need to get 7 emeralds to free her

What's great:
Platforming is very precise. A sudden misstep can spell disaster
You also have a projectile to attack enemies
Jump once and jump again to do a but stop
The game is very very linear. You really can't get lost

What's not so great:
Hit detection is very precise. A single mistake and you will lose your life
The bosses are too easy. There is a pattern for everything
Some items cause you to instantly die

Music: Ok. Lots of organ tracks
Status: Finish the game and rescued Minnie
Should you play this game: No, it's not that fun.

Adventures of Batman and Robin

Now this is how you do a Batman game

Genre: Action 

Platform: SNES 

  

Difficulty: Challenging 

What is it about: Play as Batman from the animated series and fight your way among his rogues gallery

What's great: 

Animation is spot on

Each mission follows a specific theme

There is variety of gameplay. There will be a stage where you drive the batmobile 

Before each mission batman needs to select his gadgets needed for the mission. If you forgot to pack the right one you can just return back to the batcave 

Wall jumping and using grappling hook

The final stage is a boss rush mode 

The riddler stage is amazing and also hard as nails 

What's not so great:

The game is unforgiving. Make a mistake and you die. 

The batmobile handling is very stiff

SNES vs Genesis version 

Graphics = SNES version is more detailed = 1 point SNES
Gameplay = SNES version is more varied then the Genesis version = 1 point SNES
Sound = SNES has music fromthe show and Genesis just have some chip tunes = 1 point SNES

SNES is the better version

Music: Masterpiece. The entire Bamtan soundtrack is played during every stage with slight variations 

Status: Finish all 8 stages 

Should you play this game: Yes, the game is spectacular. 

Alien Soldier

Game with just a boss rush mode 

Game no: 271

Genre: Shooter

Platform: Genesis 

 

Difficulty: Insane 

What is it about: Play as an alien soldier (which looks like a humanoid eagle) and you are task to destroy all the other aliens. 

What's great:

Choose from six different weapons with different hit ranges (fire homing is the easiest to use)

25 stages with 20 seconds intervals from the next boss

Each bosses are unique in design and have different hit points 

There are unlimited continues so you will die a lot of times 

Graphics is 2D graphics overlay with another 3D graphics 

What's not so great:
